This page shows the blog pages. For most trips, there is one blog per day. Clicking on the photo for a day will take you to a slider: a photo carousel that shows the photos large. Clicking on the title will take you to another page with more information about the photos.

The link Top will take you back to the top of this list.

TitelObservations 2016-02
Usually I walk around with a big telephoto lens to take pictures of birds and animals. But besides the camera, I also have a phone with a lens, which is easy for plants. Waarneming.nl is very attractive to determine the species, especially because of the automatic species recognition and the manual check by moderators. Many of the photos come from my big camera.

Normally I use a blog for 1 day, but for this project that runs over years I use months. This text is created by default for the waarneming.nl pages, but the intention is that I adjust all these texts.

TitelObservations June 2016
In June it was nice photo weather to walk around Meijendel, the water extraction area near the dunes between The Hague and Wassenaar. The most special observation that month was a tree frog. Not found by me, but I was also allowed to take a few photos of the ladies who kept looking at the bushes. That year there was a lot of water in the dune area in the pools, which the dragonflies and orchids can appreciate.

TitelObservations July 2016
In 2016 the sailing season started late, the first photos are at the dunes of Voornes dune. Then I was mainly busy with dragonflies and butterflies. We sailed "inland" to Breskens, with stops in Kats (Oosterschelde) and Terneuzen. Near Terneuzen is the Braakman, also a beautiful nature reserve. In my boat blog you can find the stories of the trip. There were quite a few bumps with the boat, as you can read in the Kats story. The shells in water cooling on the way to Terneuzen did not make it. It is actually nice to read the old blogs.

TitelObservations August 2016
De Kwade Hoek is a nature reserve near the dunes and sandbanks in the mouth of the Haringvliet. The name refers to the dangerous sandbanks where many ships have run aground and perished. In the past, but still. A large part of the dune area is closed off during the breeding season, but from the end of August you can walk around more. These photos were taken next to a small stream behind the row of dunes. The dunes are very low.

TitelObservations December 2016
The nature reserve where there is always something to see Meijendel. Meijendel is the dune area between Scheveningen and Wassenaar. It is very large, and has many purposes: sea defense with high dunes, water extraction with water from the Rhine after filtering through the sand, and as a result of protection a beautiful walking, cycling and nature area. These photos were taken on a beautiful winter day.

TitelObservations June 2017
The observations also indicate what we did: early June we went to Stellendam, where there are many nature reserves. Then we sailed to Vlieland by boat where we stayed for a few days. And the species names describe the area: a coastal leaf-cutter bee and a dune robberfly. Islands often have their own biotope with the associated species.

TitelObservations 2021-05
In 2021 I have the first observations again. Now from my second life, after my stroke in 2019. May 2021 I was able to do a lot, and the observations tell that story. The photos are from bike rides at Bergschenoek, a midweek Limburg (Arcen) and a weekend at Ootmarsum. When I look at photos now (2025) I mainly see dragonflies. And I see that automatic validation available in waarneming.nl. That is great for collectors like me. And it encourages amateurs like me to enter many species. That makes researchers happy again.

TitelObservations June 2021
June 2021 is one of the months with many observations from Zoetermeer, Voornes Duin, the Maasvlakte, the Weerribben, Wijhe (on the IJssel) and also Bergschenhoek. With automatic species recognition I can now identify plants by species name. Or more precisely: the image recognition determines the species. While walking around I see familiar plants, but especially plants that are special to me. The intention is that I can also determine the species myself, but that is difficult.

TitelObservations August 2021
Most observations were made on bike rides. There are still many insects. You notice that certain species are seen earlier or later in the season. In August the nature is already less green and the days are shorter.

In the fall of 2021 I was not in such shape, until summer 2022. That is why there are not many photos and Observations. What there is, is mostly from the garden or nearby.

TitelObservations May 2022
In spring, the garden comes to life. The plants have all been planted or sown this month. The municipality is sowing flowers in more and more places, so that is not really what waarneming.nl is meant for. But for me, they are photos, the bit "sown or wild" I ignore for this site.

TitelObservations June 2022
But a photo this month, a "weed" between the tiles. We have (too) many tiles around the house, but it is amazing how many different plants come up between the tiles. Sometimes they are nice plants, and often it says on waarneming or wiki that the species originally comes from the Mediterranean area. Climate change in small details...

TitelObservations 2022-07
In July the great masterwort blooms, with flowers that attract many different species. From a large city giant to small bees and hoverflies. The young grasshoppers (nymphs) on the hydrangea are also nice. In terms of color they are almost identical to the leaves of the shrub.

TitelObservations Februari 2022
On a beautiful but cold day I walk with lens and camera over the heath hoping to see birds that are less common in Bergschenhoek. But the birds are not there, therefore other species. The badger have not seen, but apparently the hole is very characteristic.

TitelObservations May 2023
In May the weather is nice, and then the animals, plants and I are happy again. The photos are from Bergschenhoek, Voornes Duin and Oostvoorne, and Zevenhuizerplas. The most special photo was that of a bittern. There are often bitterns in the reeds, which results in at least 20 photographers with beautiful lenses. By the way, nice bird species are often seen in the area.

TitelObservations June 2023
In June we went to the dunes at Voorne, where there are always many different species. If this is compared to a mowed lawn, the difference is very big. This post has different grasses and clovers, insects and all sorts of things.

TitelObservations July 2023
Also in July many photos of insects and plants especially from Bergschenhoek, Berkel and Meijendel (near Wassenaar). The large number of photos shows that I can play nicely with automatic species recognition. That of course also the goal: the investment in automatic species recognition yields many more observations. Especially in my case not birds, because I could determine those myself. Mostly anyway.

TitelObservations August 2023
If you look closely, you will see more and more creatures in the garden. And often certain insects are bound to a certain family of flower species. In this way you will soon have dozens of species, each with their preferences. In the summer I read the booklet Mijn 1000 soorten tuin. The biologist tries to determine 1000 species in a year in his garden of 200 m2, including the sky that he sees. He came to 1518 species. 400 moths requires a biologist I think, but it shows how many species there are in gardens.

TitelObservations September 2023
September is a good month for spiders in our garden. We have them from small to large, where I usually don't see or photograph the really small ones. The observations are quite diverse this month, with birds, plants, flies, bees and wasps.

TitelObservations October 2023
After the spiders it is time for the mushrooms. They stand out during the daily rounds through the neighborhood. In the meantime I know that you only have mushrooms near older trees and vegetation. The photos are of various forests that are within cycling distance: Bergschenhoek, Berkel, Kralingse Bos and the Rotte. When I look at it now, there are quite few species. A nice resolution for 2025: find more mushrooms.

TitelObservations December 2023
There is not much to say about just 1 mushroom. Nature is asleep, the mess has been eaten and it is waiting for a new season.

TitelObservations Januari 2024
It is winter, but the cormorants are already in their beautiful breeding plumage. Cormorants, and also the grey herons, are also busy revising their nests from last year, or they are looking for a place in the colony. The colony of these cormorants is at the Rotte.

TitelObservations February 2024
The snowdrops have been blooming for a while, but more plants are blooming in February. Many of the earlier bloomers benefit from the light they get before the trees and shrubs cast shade. The snowdrops and celandine are good examples of this. Periwinkle is green all year round, and wins the battle against many other plants in our garden.

TitelObservations March 2024
This month's observations were made in the garden and during my walks in Bergschenhoek. Many plants are already flowering in March, including the first bees and ladybirds. The most striking species for me was the butterbur, which has large flower clusters. An example of a plant (weed) that I have never consciously seen. In the garden I pull out butterbur before it flowers.

TitelObservations April 2024
This month a lot of observations around our house, and also a lot of photos from Spain. Around our house there are again a lot of insects, certainly also thanks to the work of the neighbors who, like us, have a lot of "weeds" in the garden. And then you get nice insects like the Red mason bee and the bee fly. The Spanish observations are mainly plants. The plants in Spain are very different, certainly once we get to a higher area. Just like in the Netherlands there are a lot of small flowering plants.

TitelObservations May 2024
May starts with the last observations in Spain. Most observations are in the area around my house. May is always a beautiful month with many flowering plants and the insects that come to them. As a photographer it is noticeable how much the camera photos are better than the phone photos.

It's not the month or the weather, but I added few observations in June.

Fagopyrum esculentum / Buckwheat / Boekweit
TitelObservations 2024-08
In August the Willow emerald damselfly always stands out. A dragonfly with beautiful colours, which is always present around the house. Both photos are again completely good for the automatic species detection, but as a photographer I find them below average.

Limax maximus / Great grey slug / Grote aardslak
TitelObservations September 2024
Sometimes you see animals that are very common, but you never see them. This month it was a Large earth snail, a slug (without a shell) and with a beautiful drawing. Wiki says "The large earth snail is a huge eater; not only plants are its food, but also supplies in cellars, dog and cat food, mushrooms and even other slugs are eaten, so it is a real omnivore. This snail can live for two to three years and hibernates." The shells have been photographed so that in due time the class of shells (Bivalvia) will also be on the website.

Phoenicurus moussieri / Moussier's redstart / Diadeemroodstaart
TitelObservations October 2024
Two hoverflies will close the observations in 2024. Next to it a photo of a photo I saw in Morocco: the Diadem Redstart. A beautiful creature that we have seen often.
